The lab's blog
A local lab in the heart of France, or a big Paris machine?
By Hadrien Mauve, co-founder of Opal Dental Lab · Clinical review: Dr Irina Visan, dental surgeon · 2026-08-17
When a practice looks for a laboratory, the choice usually presents itself like this: on one side the big Paris structures, with their production capacity, their catalogues and their prices; on the other, the local laboratory, with a technician you know and pieces you can discuss in person. Both models exist because both answer real needs. The useful question is not which one is "better", but what each one costs you and brings you in your actual practice — case by case.
What proximity changes, concretely
On professional forums, the ads posted by practitioners looking for a laboratory all read the same: home-grown talent, reachable, fluent in digital workflows and post-and-cores. What they are describing is proximity in the useful sense of the word — and it is not about local sentiment. It is a technician who knows your preparation habits, your shade requirements, the way you mark your margins — and who remembers them on the next case, because the same hands work your pieces. It is an urgent remake that goes to the bench the same day, not on the courier's next round. It is a complex shade settled by seeing the patient, not by filling in a form field. On aesthetic cases, difficult occlusions and everything that needs a back-and-forth of judgement, that shared memory makes the difference between a fitted piece and a piece that is merely "as per the order form".
What the big machines do well — and what they cost you
Let us be honest: the large platforms have real strengths. Prices held down by volume, industrialised processes, decent consistency on standard pieces. If your activity is overwhelmingly simple procedures, they do the job. The cost lies elsewhere: you are one client reference among thousands, the technician changes from one piece to the next, and your contact is a customer service that relays messages — not someone with your piece in their hands. The day a case leaves the standard path, a shade comes down to a detail, or a decision has to be made fast, the structure was not designed for it. It works very well — until the case where it no longer does. And that case always shows up with a patient in the chair.
Our answer: not making you choose
We built Opal to hold both ends. A human-scale laboratory in Déols, at the geographic centre of the country, where pieces pass through the same hands and your feedback goes straight to the bench — with one week door to door anywhere in France, geography helping. A digital platform on par with the big structures: one-minute ordering, scans that arrive on their own, real-time tracking, design and photo approval before shipping. And for capped procedures, an audited partner route that lets us hold 100% Santé prices without asking the Déols workshop to work at a loss. You choose the route on every order, seeing the price and the lead time. A big structure's capacity when it is useful, a workshop's memory where it counts.
